Hello and welcome to Desi Girls Can Lift Too!
Just to let you know a little bit about myself, my name is Nabeelah Karim, I’m 25, and born and raised in Toronto. Although I’ve never lived in Bangladesh, my parent’s home country, I often feel like I do. I live in a predominantly South Asian neighbourhood in East York/Scarborough and have a large circle of family and friends – to give you an idea how large, my wedding had a little over 600 people!
My personal goal is to be healthy by eating clean and getting fit through strength training, but my primary mission is to educate and encourage my fellow South Asians to do so as well! According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, South Asians living in North America have a high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Much of my family and friends in my community not only have diabetes, but have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and some in their early 40s have experienced heart attacks already. I believe if we begin to eat healthy and exercise earlier on in our lives we can prevent this from continuing to happen.
On my blog, I share my favourite healthy recipes and exercise routines that helped me achieve my goals. I also share the challenges I faced as a South Asian woman such as eating healthy at home while everyone else eats unhealthy food, finding the courage to join a gym and more.
Of course you don’t have to be South Asian to be healthy! This blog is open to everyone so lets get healthy and fit together!
